Thoughts on our Independence Day

A DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE

For the Twenty-first Century

When, in the course of a nation’s journey, it becomes necessary for its People to dissolve the political bands which have proven so destructive of their potential, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that we should declare the causes which oblige us to now rebel against the authorities assumed by these bands. And when there is recorded a long train of abuses and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute political tyranny over the Citizenry, it is our right, it is our duty, to throw off such bands and to provide new guards for our future freedom and security. To prove these assertions, let the facts regarding the ruling parties be submitted to a candid world.

* They have refused to assent to laws the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.

* They have refused to enforce laws necessary for the safety and security of the Citizenry.

* They have exempted themselves from laws rigorously enforced upon all others.

* They have placed onerous restrictions upon the right of Citizens to affect their laws, reserving to themselves the power to legislate in all cases whatsoever.

* They have deceptively attached provisions to unrelated legislation to circumvent debate.

* They have persistently failed to prudently balance public revenues and expenditures.

* They have crafted complex tax regulations to enrich their supporters and confuse all others.

* They have imposed taxes without our consent to fund their many ill-conceived programs.

* They have erected a multitude of new government positions, and sent hither swarms

of officers to harass the people and eat out their substance.

* They have provided themselves enhanced compensation even as their fellow Citizens suffer.

* They have accepted domestic and foreign support for their causes in return for secret favors.

* They have selected judges, based not on merit, but upon allegiance to their philosophies.

* They have excited domestic animosities among us to further their political aims.

* They have partnered with the Fourth Estate to spread their propaganda, thus denying the Electorate the means to be well informed.

* They have unduly invaded the privacy of those considered enemies and engaged in vigorous character assassination.

* They have manipulated natural boundaries to gain electoral advantage.

* They have chosen the most unworthy of candidates to occupy high office.

* They have arrogantly discarded solemn promises as quickly as their elections are complete.

* They have registered their allegiance to party and thus disavowed allegiance to their nation.

Entities, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a tyrant, are unfit to hold powers over a free people. We, therefore, appealing to the Grand Architect of the Universe for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the name, and by authority of the good Citizens of these many states declare that we are, and of right ought to be, free and independent voters; absolved from all allegiance to political oligarchies. We further declare that We, The People, now assert our rightful sovereignty and will henceforth determine directly the national policies that most affect our lives. And for the support of this declaration, with firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor.
